So what does it mean to go Live and why should anyone care? Well founders Kevin Clark and Garrett Kababik of LiveFrom believe that going live is the most revealing and true form of entertainment. It is interactive. All that watch it are sharing in the experience. A goal is scored... we rejoice together. Want to ask a question and get a real-time answer? Gotta have live! Want to see the riots in Oakland as they occur, rather than watching a censored version 12 hours later? Live is now, and now is pretty important. Live is virtual reality, it is ultimate transparency.
However, a recent study conducted by Akamai reported that that 95% of content delivered by CDNs (Content Delivery Networks) is previously recorded video or VOD (Video On Demand). We see this as opportunity. Entertainers tried to bring live content to the web 20 years ago, but the technology wasn't ready yet. Now in the year 2010, technology is ready... and so are the people.
Reduce travel expenses and broaden audiences. By creating new types of content, we can attract new types of viewers. By keeping production costs low we can cover the smaller events. By changing the model of delivering content everyone can get involved. $3000 can provide a High School athletic department with the means to stream home games to families, alumni, and talent scouts. Larger scale events will offer the user control over camera angeles and commentary.
By organizing our content geographically it is our hope that the search for content becomes less arbitrary and more pertinent. Find live content at places you are, places you're going, and places you've been. See what the hotel in Paris looks like now, not from the pictures that are 40 years old. Find a restaurant with an ambiance that suites your style. Find a bar that isn't too busy, or one that's full of dancing people.
LiveFrom is using Wowza Media Systems on the Amazon Cloud to convert a video signal into a file format specific to the device that is requesting it.
